On June 19, 2025, the Seaway International Bridge Corporation (SIBC) proudly unveiled The Three Sisters, a striking mural by Kirby Thompson, a talented Akwesasronon artist and daughter of Chief Vince Thompson of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA). As an SIBC team member, Kirby’s artwork powerfully uplifts the spirit, identity, and resilience of the Akwesasne community.
The Three Sisters corn, beans, and squash are deeply woven into the fabric of Haudenosaunee culture and storytelling. More than just staple crops, they embody the principles of balance, sustainability, and mutual support. In Akwesasne, these plants have nourished both body and spirit for generations, traditionally grown together in the same mound to help one another thrive. This enduring agricultural practice reflects a deeper relationship between the people, the land, and each other values that continue to shape and strengthen the community today.
The unveiling ceremony featured welcoming remarks from SIBC Bridge Director Marc Chénier, followed by Kirby’s heartfelt reflection on her creative process and the mural’s cultural significance. Chief Vince Thompson and Natalie Kinloch, Chair of the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL), also spoke, emphasizing the vital role of Indigenous art in public spaces and its power to tell stories through visual expression.
SIBC celebrates Kirby Thompson’s remarkable achievement. The Three Sisters is a vibrant tribute to Akwesasne’s heritage, resilience, and community, serving as a lasting reminder of enduring Haudenosaunee traditions. The mural is now prominently displayed on the historic Cornwall Bridge pier, facing Cornwall, Ontario.
